Artist Statement

This dream-like series explores states of transition. I’ve always been fascinated by portals, and they are integral to many of my favourite stories. The most recent source of inspiration for me was the penultimate episode of Bojack Horseman, “The View From Halfway Down”. The void in my version is not quite as sinister however, and there is more potential for the characters to have some agency.

Portal I and Portal II both have a 3-dimensional aspect to them, with a recessed doorway giving the illusion of an infinite space beyond; the blackness is created with light-absorbing velvet.

The Dark Matter miniature button works push further into the shadowy world beyond the doorway, with ghostly grey figures built up from a single shade of deep grey thread.
