BIO
Born in Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand
Over the past few years May has been creating intricate textile works, combining hand embroidery with painterly elements. These works tend towards the quirky, lyrical and contemplative, with a strong narrative drive. May's pieces are held in the New Zealand Maritime Museum Hui Te Ananui a Tangaroa, and private collections across Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia.
Recently May has returned to her love of drawing, and is enjoying working with ink on paper.
May graduated with a BFA (Film) from Ilam School of Fine Arts, Christchurch, in 1992. Her short films from the 1990s, including the award-winning "Feline", have been shown in art galleries and many international film festivals in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally.
May worked for several years in animation, illustration and design in Sydney; she returned to her art practice after coming back home with her young family in 2011.
May’s name reflects her paternal Dalmatian ancestry; pronounced as the anglicised “True-buh-vitch”. She also has Scottish ancestry, and lives in West Auckland.
